Most people don’t know this, but Germany has some of the best scholarship deals in the world. Tuition is either free or very cheap (even for international students), and DAAD scholarships give you a monthly stipend on top of that.

DAAD stands for Deutscher Akademischer Austauschdienst. Don’t worry about pronouncing it. Just know it’s Germany’s main scholarship organization.

What DAAD covers:

• Monthly stipend: €992 for master’s students, €1,300-€1,400 for PhD students

• Health, accident, and liability insurance

• Travel allowance

• Annual study allowance: €460

When it opens: Different DAAD programs have different deadlines throughout 2026. Some open as early as August 2026 for 2027 entry. Others open in November 2026 or later.

Who can apply: Literally any field. Engineering, Social Sciences, Arts, Medicine, Agriculture, Development Studies. They have programs for everything.

Some programs (like EPOS) require at least 2 years of work experience. Others are open to fresh graduates.

Why I like DAAD: Germany doesn’t play games. If you get the scholarship, you’re set. The living stipend is enough to cover rent, food, and transport. You can even save a little or send money home if you’re careful.

Plus, a lot of German master’s programs are taught in English now. So you don’t need to learn German before you apply (though learning it while you’re there helps).

The hard part: Knowing which DAAD program to apply for. There are so many options that people get overwhelmed and don’t apply at all.

This one is designed specifically for professionals.

What it covers:

• Full tuition.

• Living expenses: AUD 30,000 per year (about AUD 2,500/month).

When it opens: Applications for 2027 entry open in February 2026 and close in April 2026. A very short window.

Who can apply for this scholarship:

• Minimum 25 years old

• At least 5 years of post-graduate work experience

Here’s what makes the Australian Awards different: they don’t want fresh graduates. They want people who’ve been working, who understand real problems in their field, and who plan to go back and use their degree to make things better.

The requirement most people trip on: You need 5 years of work experience after your bachelor’s degree. Not internships. Not part-time gigs during school. Full work experience.

But if you have that, you’re exactly who they’re looking for.

Let me tell you a little about Commonwealth Scholarships.

This is funded by the UK government specifically for students from Commonwealth countries. Nigeria is one of them.

I don’t talk about this one enough, but it’s solid. Really solid.

What it covers:

• Full tuition

• Monthly living stipend (around £1,347/month depending on location)

• Return flights to the UK

• Thesis/dissertation grant

• Warm clothing allowance (because UK weather is no joke)

When it opens: Applications for 2027 entry open around September 2026 and close in October or December 2026, depending on which Commonwealth scholarship stream you're applying to.

Who can apply: Master’s and PhD students. They have different streams based on your field and career goals. One stream focuses on development-related fields (like public health, agriculture, education, etc.). Another is for PhD students in any field.

Here’s what I like about Commonwealth: they’re genuinely looking for people who will return home and make an impact. If your career plan involves returning to Nigeria, Ghana, Kenya (or wherever) to build something, this scholarship supports that.

The tricky part: You need a strong development angle in your application. Just saying “I want a master’s degree” won’t cut it. You have to show how this degree will help solve a problem back home.

That’s the packaging piece most people miss.

Quick question: have you heard of Erasmus Mundus?

It’s one of the best-kept secrets in scholarship hunting. Here’s why I love it.

Erasmus Mundus Joint Master’s programs let you study in at least 2 European countries during your master’s degree. You could complete Year 1 in Spain and Year 2 in Sweden. Or Year 1 in France, Year 2 in Germany.

You get degrees from both universities.

What it covers:

• Full tuition

• Monthly living allowance (€1,400/month)

• Travel costs

• Visa fees

• Health insurance

When it opens: Most programs open applications between October 2025 and January 2026 for a September 2026 start. Some are already open now.

Who can apply: Any field. I’ve seen programs in Public Health, Data Science, Engineering, Environmental Studies, Agricultural Economics, you name it.

The catch? You need to pick your specific program carefully. There are more than 100 Erasmus Mundus programs, each with its own focus and partner universities.

Everyone can win scholarships.

I used to think that scholarships were only for people with at least a 2-1 or first class. This means you have at least a 3.5/5.0. So far, I’ve interviewed 3 people who got scholarships with a low GPA (2-2). Aaron (Mathematics), Blessing (Applied Statistics), and Olusola (Biomedical Engineering). Having a high GPA is good, but winning scholarships isn’t about your GPA. There is something else.

I also used to think that only first-class holders (above 4.5/5.0) can get a fully funded PhD straight from undergrad. Till I held visa interview coaching for 3 different scholars who didn’t match that profile. Two of them got it with only a 2-1, and one of them with an HND (Higher National Diploma). This made me really curious about what the committee actually looks for. I found something really interesting.

The strength of your profile and the competition level of the scholarship are the major determining factors. Competition depends on where you apply. Getting into Stanford for a master’s in accounting is tougher than getting into the same program at Augusta University. You need a stronger profile for Stanford.

Getting scholarships requires intentionality. You need to match your profile to the right competition level. The same profile can get accepted and rejected in different places. I applied with the same profile for a PhD in Data Science at the University of Buffalo and Clemson University. I got rejected at Buffalo but was fully funded at Clemson University.

Your profile might already be strong; you’ve just been applying to the wrong places. The US alone will award over 1.7 million scholarships and fellowships in 2026. That’s worth more than $7.4 billion. These scholarships are spread across different programs/universities.

Today, let’s position you to get a slice of that pie. The scholarship committee considers various factors in each document you submit. Understanding this gives you insight into their thought process.

Application Packet

When applying for any scholarship, you’ll be required to submit some documents. All documents play different roles in your application packet. They guide different parts of the application decision. Let’s understand what each document is doing.

1. Academic Certificate and Transcripts. This shows that you have studied the foundational courses needed to thrive in that program. It could be from your bachelor’s and master’s degrees. It also shows how well you perform academically. A high GPA is always a good thing in every academic circle.

2. Academic CV. This shows your experience and achievements in an orderly way. A good academic CV contains important details. Your education, honors and awards, work experience, teaching experience, research experience, skills, publications, and so on. The best predictor of the future is the past. Your CV shows your past and your track record.

3. Statement of Purpose (SOP). Also called a Goal Statement, Personal Statement, or Motivational Letter. It is your unique story. It shows the committee who you are and why you deserve a place in their program. What are your motivations? What are your short-term and long-term goals? How is our program a good fit for you? How can you contribute to this program? This is mainly needed when applying for internal scholarships. A good example is graduate assistantships in the US/Canada. The department funds you, so you have to show a strong fit for the program.

4. Essays. This is mainly for external scholarships. Some examples are: Mastercard Foundation Scholarships (Multiple countries), Chevening Scholarships (UK), Commonwealth Scholarships (UK), SI Scholarships for Global Professionals (Sweden), and Erasmus Mundus Joint Masters (Europe). They have essay prompts and require stories from you to show that you are the one they’re looking for. Every external scholarship is set up to fund a particular mission/goal. The essays show that you are already successfully doing what they are looking for. You are successful in the criteria they look for. Different scholarships have different criteria. Chevening and the Commonwealth are from the same UK government but very different. Commonwealth rewards academic excellence, and Chevening rewards societal impact. A first-class graduate without societal impact won’t get Chevening. A 2-2 graduate who owns an NGO that has done projects to affect 3,000 people in their community will.

5. Passport. This is the legal proof of identity issued by your country. We call this an “international passport” in Nigeria. Some external scholarships (e.g., SISGP) require this when you apply. It shows you meet the nationality requirement. Some scholarships are set up for specific nationalities.

6. Recommendation letters (2-3). This shows what others have to say about you. Are you really who you claim to be in your essays? The experts have accomplished significant things in their fields. And they’ve also worked with you in the past. This makes what they have to say about you really important.

7. Tests like the GRE or GMAT. This is mostly needed in the US, Canada, and some schools in the UK. It is an IQ test showing your mental preparedness for that program. For example, my program (PhD in Data Science at KSU) requires a minimum quantitative score of 160/170 in the GRE. Data Science requires an analytical mind, which is why this requirement is there. You see something similar for some other programs.

8. Proof of English Proficiency, such as TOEFL, IELTS, or Duolingo. This shows how proficient you are in English. Each test assesses your speaking, writing, listening, and reading. Most programs use it to gauge how well you can learn in English. US/Canadian universities are now waiving this based on your nationality. But some schools go the extra mile to require that all Teaching Assistants (TAs) should have it. TAs are a form of graduate assistantships.

9. Writing sample. Some programs require this. It shows how good you are at academic writing. Academic writing is different from social media writing. Usually, if you’ve done a final year research project, it serves as academic writing.

10. Research proposal. This is also only required by some PhD or Master’s by research programs. It shows how thoroughly you have thought out a research problem and the method you intend to use to solve it.

11. Publications. A publication is a research work that has been published in an academic journal. This is an example. This shows very good research experience, especially if it was published in a top-tier journal. Not everyone applying has publications. But if you do, it’s an added plus. More on this later.

Depending on the scholarship you’re applying for, they’ll require a combination of the documents above. Even if you have all these documents, you still need to stand out in a few of them. Scholarships are only given to scholars. Let’s talk about how you can show you’re a scholar.

Standing Out From The Crowd

Many people still get rejected even after submitting all the application documents. The reason is simple. They’ve not shown that they are exceptional in any way. I have seen five areas where you can show you’re exceptional. You mustn’t be exceptional in all, but you must stand out in at least one. The more the better.

1. CGPA. This stands for cumulative grade point average. It applies to either your bachelor’s degree and/or master’s degree (if you have one). It’ll be written on your transcript. You need to have a high CGPA. But what does that even mean? Generally speaking, you should have at least a 4.0/5.0 (or 3.4/4.0). Obviously, the higher the better. You can use this free WES CGPA calculator to convert your CGPA to a 4.0 scale (used in the US/Canada). Here is a thread to guide you on the conversion.

2. Relevant work experience. For this point to count, it has to be relevant to the course you’re applying for. If I’ve worked 5 years as a civil engineer and I’m applying for a master’s in computer science, it doesn’t count. You need at least 3-5 years of relevant work experience to be exceptional here. Also, what makes you exceptional isn’t just the duration, but the achievements you’ve made in those years. That’ll be obvious on your academic CV and SOP.

3. Publications. This is especially helpful if you’re going for a PhD. A traditional PhD is a research degree. Now there are professional PhDs, but that’s not what we are talking about here. Having two publications makes you exceptional. It shows strong research experience, as you’ve completed the research pipeline from start to finish. A research project is considered finished when it’s published in a journal.

4. Community projects. Some scholarships, such as the Chevening Scholarship, specifically recognize this. If you’re exceptional in this, you can get the scholarship even if you don’t meet the other points above. Being exceptional here means you led the project. It was your initiative, and it changed the lives of some people in some way. You participating a few times (probably during your NYSC) doesn’t carry as much weight as owning it.

5. Tests like GRE/GMAT. This is another way to stand out. I consider it the fastest way. The others take at least a year. This can be gotten in one month if you prepare appropriately. For it to count, you need to apply to a program that requires it or makes it optional. Some programs don’t require it again and won’t consider it if you submit. Based on my observation, getting anything above 310 is good. If you get above 320, you’re more competitive.

Bottom Line

When you have a strong profile, all that’s left is strong positioning. Apply to a place where your profile would be competitive. Competition depends on where you apply, so always evaluate the competition level before applying. Two ways to do this is to:

1. Check the program or university’s acceptance rate.

2. Check the program or university’s ranking.

All this information is available through a simple Google search. This also mostly applies to internal scholarships offered by programs. All external scholarships are highly competitive. I woke up to this message from a scholar in my SA Bootcamp 3.0 last weekend.

Over the past few months, I’ve gotten similar messages from other scholars. Messages of uncertainty about whether their efforts and investments in US education would be worth it in the end. And they are right to feel that way. Since President Donald Trump took office, many new policies have been announced. Some of them directly affect international students, like:

1. July 8: Visa duration for several African countries was reduced to 3 months.

2. September 6: US visa interview can only be done in your country of nationality/residence.

3. September 19: The H-1B visa (work visa) has an extra filing fee of $100,000.

4. October 20: The $100k H-1B visa fee doesn’t apply to students on an F-1 visa.

5. October 29: No automatic Employment Authorization (STEM-OPT) extension.

Many of these policies use terminology you might not be familiar with. Stay with me, they’ll all be clear very soon.

If you don’t understand what’s really happening, all these new policies can make you postpone your American Dream. This newsletter is to empower you with the truth. The truth makes you free. Free from worry or fear. It makes you act confidently when everyone around you is panicking. This will be a long newsletter, so sit back and enjoy the ride. You are about to be fired up to succeed.

To understand these policies, we must start at the roots.

The New America: President Donald Trump

Some definition of terms:

• Immigrants: People who move to a new country with the intention of living there permanently. E.g., the U.S. Green Card Lottery, which awards more than 50,000 green cards each year.

• Non-immigrants: People who enter a country temporarily for a specific purpose. For example: tourism, study, conference, temporary work, etc.

You are classified as an immigrant or a non-immigrant before entering the country.

Before Donald Trump got into office, he was very vocal about one thing: The mass deportation of undocumented immigrants. He told Time Magazine that his target for his 4-year tenure is to deport 15 million to 20 million people who are undocumented in the US. No one knows the total number of undocumented immigrants currently. But it’s clear that he’s on that mission. By undocumented, they mean any person in the US who isn’t in a valid visa status (e.g., an expired visa or illegal entry).

A friend told me of a time he had an accident here in Georgia. The lady who hit him was an undocumented immigrant. In situations like this, her car insurance should cover the damage to his car. But she didn’t have car insurance because of her status. He had to let her go and fight to get the bill from his own car insurance or his pocket. These things happen every day.

So far, President Trump has signed 210 executive orders, 54 memoranda, and 104 proclamations. That’s a total of 368 presidential actions in only 10 months. For context, President Joe Biden did 178 presidential actions in his first two years.

What’s the result of his actions so far?

More than 2 million undocumented immigrants have left the US (1.6 million people self-deported and 527,000 were deported). Obviously, all his efforts are working; he has already achieved 10% of his goal. Don’t expect him to stop now.

From all of this, you can see who he is after: Undocumented immigrants.

If you are a documented non-immigrant (e.g., on a student or work visa), you aren’t his focus. If you change from a non-immigrant to an immigrant (e.g., a Green Card or American citizenship) following the documented path, you aren’t his focus.

You can still come in as a student and follow the documented path to citizenship. Student visas are still being approved every day; my client got approved last week.

Let’s see the full documented student path so you know what lies ahead.

The Road Ahead: From Student to American Citizen

One mindset switch I had to make to enjoy opportunities in the US was to move from a short-term to a long-term perspective. So I mean thinking in years, not days. Nothing great happens overnight. It’s our desire for fast food that keeps us sick, weak, and unproductive.

Enjoying the American Dream is a long game, and you have to be aware of the entire path. This knowledge shouldn’t frighten you, but empower you. This gives you a roadmap to plan ahead and avoid wasting unnecessary time in any phase.

The US rewards those who plan ahead, so you should be making adequate plans for the next phase before you get there. The documented path from student to American citizen has 5 phases.

Phase 1: Student Visa (Duration: 2-6+ years)

The majority of students receive F-1 visas (non-immigrant visas). If you come with your dependent (spouse or child), they get an F-2 visa.

There’s also the J-1 visa. People call it the Exchange Visitor visa. It’s for anyone doing work-and-study exchange programs. The visa covers a lot of different people. Students, research scholars, professors, interns, trainees, and summer work travelers. A pretty broad range. This newsletter focuses on the path for an F-1 visa holder.

The duration you spend as a student varies based on the kind of program you’re doing. It also adds up if you do multiple programs.

Generally speaking, the duration of the programs are:

• Undergraduate: 4 years

• Master’s: 18 months to 2 years

• PhD: 4-6 years

The new visa laws require your visa interview to take place in your country of citizenship or permanent residence. Previously, students could travel to another country for their interview, as I did in 2023. But that is no longer permitted.

A new policy came out this year that changed things for several African countries. Before, people could get visas lasting 2, 4, or even 5 years. Now those same countries are limited to single-entry visas that only last 3 months. This affects different visa types like B-1/B-2 for tourism, F-1 for students, and others.

Last month, Ghana’s own was reversed back to multiple-entry 5 years for B1/B2 visitor visas and 4 years for F1 visas. We hope other countries (e.g., Nigeria and Cameroon) experience the same. You can check the visa duration for your country here.

You might hear this 3-month duration and be worried. One of my Nigerian clients, whom I coached for her F-1 visa interview in August, asked me, “Do they expect me to complete my PhD in just 3 months?”. Here’s what I told her:

Your visa and your duration of status (D/S) are 2 different things. Your visa is the stamp on your passport that allows you to enter the country. Your duration of status is how long you can stay in the country. For international students, there is no fixed end for their duration of status. This is why someone can still legally be in the US doing one degree after the other. So for the new 3 months policy, you can only enter once but you stay as long as your program demands then work after if you like. However, if you want to leave the US maybe for a wedding or burial, you have to do another interview and get a new visa. It doesn’t matter if your 3-months visa is still valid. Simply because it has changed from a multiple-entry visa to a single-entry visa.

That handled her fear completely. Although she was denied before, I showed her how to give her best in the interview, and she was approved. She is in the US now (I’m so happy for her).

The visa process now includes an additional background check before your visa is approved. It is called “Administrative Processing”. During this time, they vet your social media for any history of political activism, such as past associations with violence. If you’re not involved in those conversations, you don’t have anything to worry about.

So get your admission with a fully funded scholarship, then get your F-1 visa, move to the US, and study. When you are done with your studies, then you’ll kick into phase 2.

Phase 2: OPT Work (Duration: 1-3 years)

After your studies, you are legally allowed to work in the US through the Post-Completion OPT. OPT stands for Optional Practical Training, and everyone is eligible for 1 year. If you are in a STEM field (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics), you can get a 24-month extension. This brings the total to 3 years for STEM students and 1 year for others.

Every international student can apply for OPT starting 90 days before their graduation. My graduation date was April 30, 2022. I applied on February 17th and got my 12-month EAD card 3 weeks later on the 8th of March. EAD means Employment Authorization. I shared my experience applying for my OPT in this video.

One major mistake I see many international students make is delaying their OPT application till they have a job offer. It sounds logical because you have a 90-day unemployment rule. This means you can’t be unemployed for more than 90 days throughout the 12-month OPT period.

But this is from a place of fear. And when they get the job offer, they now have to apply for OPT with premium processing, or they lose the job. Applying for regular OPT is $470. If you add premium processing to get your response in 30 days instead of 90, you’ll pay an extra $1,695 (Total: $2,165). I said earlier that the US rewards those who plan ahead; you see a clear example here.

These people are acting like Thomas in the Bible. Being a Thomas is expensive. Don’t be a Thomas.

Jesus said to him, “Have you believed because you have seen me? Blessed are those who have not seen and yet have believed.” - John 20:29 ESV

Here’s what makes the OPT (EAD card) great. You can pick your employment start date, and you don’t need a job offer before applying. If you have doubts, then set your start date a month after your graduation, so you use that month to find a job.

The new US policy affecting this phase is extra vetting for those seeking the STEM extension. Previously, it was automatically approved, provided you were working for an E-verified company. Now they will vet every applicant first before approving their extension. They want to ensure they aren’t doing anything that endangers America’s safety. Similar to the social media vetting for F-1 visas.

While on your OPT, you have to start the next phase as soon as possible.

Phase 3: H1-B Work Visa (3-6 years)

The H-1 B is a non-immigrant visa for specialized jobs—roles that require specific expertise and at least a bachelor’s degree. So after getting at least a Bachelor’s degree in a field, you can get the H1-B to work. H-1B visa holders may live and work temporarily in the US for 3 years, with the option to extend for another 3 years. Making a total of 6 years.

Sounds juicy, but here’s the catch: Getting the visa is lottery-based.

USCIS (US Citizenship and Immigration Services) sets an annual cap. Then they select applicants from everyone who registered, based on that limit. So even people with the best qualifications might not be picked, simply because it’s a lottery. The lottery happens every year around March. After you’re selected, you still need to file a petition, which can be approved or denied if you don’t meet the requirements. (Requirements like having a bachelor’s degree, etc)

To help you understand, here are the numbers for the most recent H-1B picks:

• Eligible registrations: 343,981

• Selected registrations: 120,141

• Annual cap: 85,000 (65,000 regular + 20,000 for those with US master’s degrees or higher)

The USCIS always selects more than the cap because not everyone who submits the petition is actually qualified. Some people might change their minds, and others might find better opportunities. Ultimately, they won’t issue more than 85,000 H1-B visas that year. Only 25% of registered applicants will receive an H-1B.

For a student on OPT, you have to be working with an employer willing to sponsor your H-1B. They will file the petition for you with USCIS. The sad part is you might not be picked. This is what makes everyone love STEM. Their employers have three opportunities to try the lottery for them. For NON-STEM folks, there is only one, and you just might be lucky. Who knows.

So this is why some NON-STEM people do a second master’s degree or a PhD while making plans to switch from Phase 2 to Phase 4. Double promotion is allowed—more on this in Phase 4.

On Sept 19, President Trump issued a proclamation that requires an additional $100,000 filing fee for H-1B visas. Previously, your employer had to pay anywhere from $1,000 to $5,000 to submit an H-1B petition; now, $100k has been added to that. On October 22, USCIS clarified that the $100k H-1B filing fee doesn’t apply to those moving from one visa type to another, for example, from an F-1 to an H-1B. That’s good news indeed.

Phase 4: Employment-Based Green Card (5+ years)

During your time on the H-1B, your employer can choose to file for your green card. The process isn’t straightforward, but I’ll give you the gist so you know what’s ahead.

Your employer starts by submitting something called a PERM certification to the Department of Labor (DOL). Then comes a series of reviews. The whole point is to prove that no qualified US workers are available for your position. They need to show there aren’t any local employees (US citizens or green card holders) who can do the job. After your employer can prove this, they will submit the actual petition.

The time it takes to get the green card depends on your country and skill level (EB-1, EB-2, or EB-3). EB stands for Employment-Based.

Chinese and Indians have to wait at least 10 years. Other nationalities would wait 2-5 years. This process kicks in when you are on an H-1B visa, so your Green card arrives before your visa expires.

The green card you get is valid for 10 years. After that, you renew the card itself. It is a permanent residence, so your status doesn’t expire.

Speaking about the double-promotion point I made earlier, you can jump from Phase 1/2 to Phase 4. This means you don’t need to get an H-1B or need an employer to file for you. This is called self-petitioning, and it can be done under two categories: EB-1A and EB-2 NIW. This is the route many international students take. It removes the 3-6 years of the H-1B timeline (More on this in a future newsletter; we already have a lot of information to process here.)

Phase 5: US Citizenship (Promised Land)

After having your green card for at least 5 years, you can apply for US citizenship. This reduces to 3 years if you’re married to a U.S. citizen. The conversion process itself takes from 8 to 12 months, and it involves several steps:

1. Applying for Naturalization.

2. Attending a biometrics appointment.

3. Participating in a citizenship interview and passing an exam.

4. Attending an oath of allegiance ceremony.

So, a year after filing, you should have your blue passport, which I call the “Promised Land”.

Again, there is a shortcut to cut the 5-year green card requirement. It reduces to 6-12 months if you join the military. However, you can only join with a Green Card.

So what should you do with all this?

We’ve covered the entire path from student to US citizen. Without a plan, this journey can drag on for 26 years. But if you take the shortcuts we talked about, you can do it in as little as 5 years. The US rewards people who plan ahead. (You can already see this from the 21 years removed when you plan ahead and use the legal shortcuts).

One of my mentees defined the US as a “high risk, high reward” country. And I agree. You are risking a lot to come here and get permanent residence. But the rewards are enormous.

• The income levels are way higher than in other countries.

• You can actually become an American citizen. (This is very hard in countries like Germany or Japan)

• High likelihood of your business succeeding.

• Meritocracy: You can go from nothing to becoming a CEO of a multinational company if you are skilled.

• Research funding: The US spends more on research and development (R&D) than many other countries combined. This is why a lot of US PhDs are fully funded.

The list can go on and on. If you are talented, ambitious, and willing to bet on yourself, the US is the best place to be (undisputed).

So with all the policies that have come up (and the upcoming ones), you now know what’s happening under the hood. You’ve also seen what the future looks like if you follow the documented path.

I’ll leave you with 3 things:

1. Always do your best

Don’t allow fear into your mind because of the news. If traveling is your goal, then lock in. Apply for admissions. Apply for scholarships. Prepare exceptionally for your visa interview. Send cold emails. Do your best without fear.

2. Be prayerful

This relocation journey is more spiritual than many people realize. Some of us are doing what no one in our family has ever done. It will be hard. You will need a lot of God’s guidance. So as you work hard, pray hard too. Let God lead you. He might lead you to go to France or Australia first before coming to the US, and that’s okay. He might not even lead you to come to the US. That’s okay too. Everyone’s destiny is not in the US.

3. Have a community

Don’t do this alone. You need a community of people on this same relocation journey. You will get discouraged. You will feel like giving up. I gave up on the US myself after my third visa denial. It’s natural. That’s what it means to be human. But ensure you have people around you when this feeling comes. They’ll spur you back to action. It was December 31, 2018 - the last day of the year. I stood outside the U.S. Embassy, clutching my passport after my second visa denial. My hands were shaking, not from the harmattan cold but from frustration.

I had done everything right - a First-Class degree, strong GRE score, TOEFL above average, and even a partial scholarship. But still, the consular officer had looked me in the eye and said, “Unfortunately, we can’t approve your visa at this time.”

That was my breaking point (or so I thought). I remember thinking, “Maybe this scholarship dream just isn’t for me.”

That day, I learned something most scholarship seekers never talk about - it’s not your GPA, your essays, or your test scores that fail first; it’s your hope.

Hope is what pushes you to write one more email, draft one more SOP, or take one more GRE practice test when everything says “stop.”
And when hope breaks, everything else collapses.

But here’s what I discovered later:
That “no” wasn’t rejection - it was redirection.

Because if I had gotten that visa in 2018, I would have gone to a school that offered no stipend and couldn’t sustain me long-term. God used that closed door to push me toward a better one - the university where I eventually got a fully funded graduate assistantship and started my PhD journey.

3 Lessons from That Day

1️⃣ Rejection is not proof you’re unqualified.
Sometimes, it’s just evidence that your story isn’t positioned yet. The right “yes” often needs the right strategy, not just effort.

2️⃣ Delays are preparation seasons.
Every denial forced me to fix something: my profile, my writing, my confidence. Each failure made my next attempt sharper.

3️⃣ You don’t lose when you start again.
You lose when you stop trying. I’ve seen people go from 5 rejections to 3 fully funded offers - because they stayed in the fight long enough to meet favor.

Looking back now, I thank God for that December day. It broke me, but it built the man who now helps thousands of students win the scholarships I once lost.

Faith doesn’t replace excellence - it strengthens it.
When you’ve done your best, and the results still don’t look like what you prayed for, remember: God’s timing is never behind schedule.

Now, go take a deep breath, enjoy that jollof rice, and get ready to apply better.

Also, assistantship allocations usually begin once the first batch of admissions is reviewed. Remember - the earlier you apply, the higher your funding chances.

💼 How to Strengthen Your Application

Here are some tips on how you can position yourself for funding like this:

1. Start with a Targeted SOP.

   • Mention specific faculty or labs you’d love to assist in.

   • Show how your data or research interests align with the department.

2. Reach Out Professionally.

   • Once you apply, email 1-2 professors or the Graduate Coordinator expressing interest in assistantship roles.

3. Highlight Technical Skills.

   • Python, SQL, R, Excel, Tableau, Power BI, or any relevant certifications - even free ones from IBM SkillsBuild or freeCodeCamp count.

4. Show Consistency.

Germany’s DAAD EPOS scholarships remain one of the most prestigious fully funded opportunities for postgraduate students in development-related fields. But they operate on a strict clock — the application window typically closes on 15 October for many programs.

If you intend to apply, treat every hour from now as critical. Below is your structured “last-mile” roadmap to elevate your chances.

Last-Minute Application Strategy

1. Confirm your target program’s EPOS deadline now

Some EPOS programs have slightly different deadlines. For example:

• Freiburg’s MEG program: 15 October 2025 for EPOS applications.

• Bremen’s ISATEC / Marine Biology EPOS: application deadline 15 October 2025. (Universität Bremen)

• Charité (International Health EPOS) programs accept applications between 1 July and 15 October.

Don’t assume deadlines - verify on the university’s EPOS or department page.

2. Complete the Online Eligibility Assessment (OEA) if required

Some EPOS programs use an OEA (Online Eligibility Assessment) to pre-screen candidates. For Freiburg’s MEG-EPOS, the OEA must typically be completed by 1 October to allow time for confirmation.

If you haven’t done it, prioritize it today.

3. Gather & polish application documents

You’ll need:

• DAAD EPOS application form

• Motivation letter(s) (for up to 3 EPOS programs) - note: if applying to >1, a second motivation letter is required for non-priority choices.

• CV (Europass format preferred)

• Transcripts and degree certificates

• Proof of work experience (2 years minimum)

• Proof of language proficiency (English / German)

• Matching all data (dates, titles) across forms + documents

Make a unified “Master PDF” ready for upload.

4. Submit before 15 October (early if possible)

Many EPOS selections are strict; late or incomplete submissions are often rejected out of hand.
If you can upload to the university portal a day or two ahead, do so - technology glitches, server downtime, or forgotten attachments are common in final days.

5. Follow up with your referees and supervisor

If your application requires endorsements, reach out politely but urgently. Confirm that:
