What is a Graduate Assistantship?
A graduate assistantship is a salaried student employment opportunity for graduate students. Graduate assistants work a set number of hours per week and, in return, receive a tuition waiver, oftentimes, a monthly living stipend, and subsidized health insurance.
There are three types of graduate assistantship positions: graduate teaching assistants (GTAs), graduate research assistants (GRAs), and graduate assistants (GAs) who offer administrative support that advances their professional and/or academic development.
Each assistantship has its own unique tasks, and duties are assigned by the department or faculty member who hires the position. The responsibilities can range from assisting professors with grading and teaching to teaching courses independently, conducting research with faculty, or even performing professional tasks in an on-campus office, lab, clinic, or facility.
How to Apply for GA?
Automatically considered
Some schools review your admission packet and pick GA offers straight from there. No extra form is needed. If you see “all admitted students are considered,” just make sure your CV and SOP highlight teaching and/or research skills.
Separate application
Other schools require you to submit a different application for a GA position. You’ll need to submit your CV and cover letter. This can sometimes lead to an interview and the GA position afterwards.
Sometimes it’s both. They shortlist you from your admission packet, then ask you to submit a GA application later.
The easiest way to know where your school stands is to check the “Funding/ Assistantship” page or email the program coordinator.
