Hi friends,
Recently, I've been learning a lot about Japan and what makes them thick. A country with a population of just 125.7 million people (11th in the World) but they are the third largest economy in the World by nominal GDP. Just after the United States and China, countries that are the 3rd and 1st largest in the world (by population).
I found several things that make them stand out but I'll be sharing about Shuhari. This is a Japanese concept made up of 3 parts: Shu-ha-ri and it's their learning strategy for mastery. Let's break it down.
Shu (守) (protect or "follow the rule"): Here the student follows every rule the teacher gives to the letter. They are followed step-by-step without deviation. The student does this even without fully understanding why. At this stage, it is important to find one teacher and commit to their method. These teachers could be physical or virtual through online courses. The idea is not to jump from one online course to the next. Stick to just one. I call this the Knowledge Stage.
Ha (破) (cut or "break the rule"): When the student has fully known the rules then he can start questioning them. At this stage, he can teach other students, discuss ideas and improve the craft. Here, the student gets a deep understanding of the reason behind the rules in the Shu stage. I call this the Understanding Stage.
Ri (離) (depart or "be the rule"): When the student has known and understood the rules till they are second nature to him then he isn't obligated to do them again. He can improve the discipline. Find better ways of getting the same results. The student is extending the discipline. I call this the Wisdom Stage.
The simplicity of this concept blew my mind and I immediately saw how I had been missing it. Here is how I plan to apply Shuhari to my mastery of YouTube:
Shu: I have taken about 5 different YouTube courses from several teachers. Now, I'll just work with the things I learned from Part-Time YouTuber Academy (PTYA) by Ali Abdaal. Doing every single thing to the letter without deviation.
Ha: After I have fully applied everything and I know them to the level of teaching it well then I would delve into questioning all the concepts and what they do. I would strive to understand the reason behind every principle.
Ri: After knowledge and understanding are gotten then I can draw up my own Youtube strategy. I would deviate in areas I feel can be better improved.
Have a great weekend.

The author plans to apply this strategy to their mastery of YouTube by sticking to one course, questioning the concepts, and developing their own strategy.
💬 Quote of the week:
“Mastery, I learned, was not something genetic, or for a lucky few. It is something we can all attain if get rid of some misconceptions and gain clarity as to the required path.”
