Hi friends,
I started this 2023 in my usual retreat mode when I do more fasting, praying, reflections and planning. I decided to slow down on my output on Social Media so I can refuel my tank for the journey ahead (2023). This month I have made a shocking discovery which is the simple secret behind getting results. I'll unpack it in today's newsletter.
Ralph Waldo Emerson said,
“Sow a thought and you reap an action; sow an act and you reap a habit; sow a habit and you reap a character; sow a character and you reap a destiny.”
Written another way,
Thought → Action → Habit → Character → Destiny
This means that our destiny doesn't depend on God. It depends on our thoughts. What we would become depends on what we think about today. This concept is so simple that we've missed it for a very long time.
My study on this has shown me that so many ancient people thought the same way too. Philosophers disagreed on all things except this one thing. It is even written in so many places in the Bible. Let's take some examples:
“And the Lord said, ... and now nothing they have imagined they can do will be impossible for them.” Genesis 11:6 (AMPC)
“Jesus said to him, “If you can believe, all things are possible to him who believes.”” Mark 9:23 (NKJV)
“Be careful what you think about because your thoughts run your life!” Proverbs 4:23 (NCV)
“For as he thinks in his heart, so is he...” Proverbs 23:7 (NKJV)
From Philosophers and Teachers:
Marcus Aurelius: A man's life is what his thoughts make of it.
Benjamin Disraeli: Everything comes if a man will only wait. I’ve brought myself by long meditation to the conviction that a human being with a settled purpose must accomplish it, and that nothing can resist a will that will stake even existence for its fulfillment.
Ralph Waldo Emerson: A man is what he thinks about all day long.
William James: The greatest discovery of my generation is that human beings can alter their lives by altering their attitudes of mind
Norman Vincent Peale: If you think in negative terms, you will get negative results. If you think in positive terms, you will achieve positive results.
This list goes on and on but I guess you get the point. If our thoughts are this important then why don't we give them the attention it requires? Why do we choose to think small? Why do we choose to hold different conflicting thoughts simultaneously? I'm choosing this year to be intentional about my thoughts.
Let me leave you with this definition of THINK I'm running with (It might be by Pastor Rick Warren but I'm not so sure):
T: Test every thought
H: Helmet of salvation (Only allow thoughts for Christians. Philippians 4:8)
I: Imagine GREAT thoughts
N: Nourish your mind daily
K: Keep on learning
Have a great weekend.
